Remote Responsibility RPCs for a WFH World

  • Locke Lord Providence One financial plaza Providence, RI United States (map)

Three years into a global pandemic, remote working has become more standard, and oftentimes the expected standard, in the workplace across the legal profession. The Rhode Island Rules of Professional Conduct (RPCs) did not contemplate this new phenomenon of teleworking when adopted because remote work simply did not exist then as it does now. As the legal profession adapted to the challenges of the pandemic, the RPCs remained an unwavering lodestar for the profession, to both protect the public and maintain the integrity of the profession. This CLE will explore the applicability of the RPCs to and ethical obligations of the remote lawyer and will discuss some of the hazards and pitfalls that remote working may uniquely present.
