Join the Thurgood Marshall Legal Society and the Women’s Bar Association for a panel discussion on this emerging topic in criminal and privacy law. Geofencing warrants—sometimes referred to as “reverse search warrants”—allow law enforcement to obtain users’ geolocation data from companies such as Google, but the courts are still defining the constitutional parameters of these searches. The panel, which will include representatives from law enforcement, the District Court, and criminal practice, will discuss how Rhode Island judges are currently analyzing applications for geofencing warrants, how law enforcement is using the data obtained under these warrants, and how courts around the country have been interpreting these requests vis-à-vis the Fourth Amendment. Audience participation is welcome and encouraged!
